Nyctanthes sambac) is a species of jasmine native to southwestern and southern Asia, in the India. It is an evergreen vine or shrub reaching up to 1-3 m tall. The leaves are opposite or in whorls of three, simple (not pinnate, like most other jasmines), ovate, 4-12.5 cm long and 2-7.5 cm broad. The flowers are produced in clusters of 3-12 together, strongly scented, with a white corolla 2-3 cm diameter with 5-9 lobes. The flowers open at night, and close in the morning. The leaves and flowers grow on short stalks. Blooming all through the year, Sampaguita are pure, white, small, dainty, and star-shaped blossoms. Sampaguita flowers do not bear seeds; therefore, the plant is cultivated by cuttings. The fruit is a purple-black berry 1 cm in diameter.There are three varieties of Sampaguita: "single petal" (singled petal flowers with five oval shaped petals), "double" (singled and doubled petal flowers with elongated petals), and "double-double" (semi doubled and doubled petal flowers) The double layered Sampaguita are called 'kampupot,' which are less fragrant.The three major varieties - 'Maid of Orleans,' 'Belle of India,' and 'Grand Duke' - differ from each other by the shape of leaves and flowers structure.Cultivation and usesIt is widely grown throughout the tropics as an ornamental plant for its strongly scented flowers. Numerous cultivars have been selected, including some with fully-double flowers such as the cultivar "Grand Duke of Tuscany".Sampaguita is used often in religious offerings, symbolizing Divine Hope. It's distinct sweet, heady fragrance is its unique feature. Sampaguita is also used medicinally; many people used it for alleviation of ailments such as headaches, fever, cough, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. The roots were used to treat wounds and snake bites. The leaves and the flowers have antipyretic and decongestant properties.The Sampaguita flower is one of three national flowers in Indonesia (adopted in 1990), the other two are the Moon Orchid & the Giant Padma. It is also the most important flower in wedding ceremonies for ethnic Indonesians, especially in the island of Java.Sampaguita was imported into the Philippines in the 17th century from the Himalayan regions.
